Why I started Obiter

A bit about me, my journey and why I decided to start Obiter.

Hi, my name is Mara, and I’m a final-year law student. Writing has always been a natural outlet for me. Long before I began my law degree, it was how I processed the world - through journaling, short stories, and creative pieces that gave me space to think, reflect, and escape.

When I started studying law, that part of me faded into the background. The pressures of deadlines, reading lists, and the constant push to perform meant that during my first two years at university, writing for myself slipped away. I was writing case notes and essays, but the words didn't feel like mine. Of course, and perhaps selfishly, I imagine that this project will help me tremendously with my law degree, providing an excellent opportunity to develop commercial awareness and shine throughout the application processes that burden undergraduate students.

This blog is my way of reconnecting with that passion. It’s a space where I can bring together my love for writing with my interests in law, business, and the world around me. Here, I want to capture not just the black-letter law I learn in lectures, but also the bigger conversations - how law shapes (and is shaped by) business, culture, and current events.

In many ways, this is a return to the reason I fell in love with writing in the first place: to explore ideas, share perspectives, and create something that speaks beyond the classroom.
